The condition of blocking pain and other sensations is called Anesthesia. After being administered with Anesthesia, the patient is then able to undergo procedures, such as surgery, without the pain and distress they would otherwise experience. The most general form of the term can include producing unconsciousness; blocking the conscious perception of pain; and preventing memory formation, unwanted movement or muscle tone, and exaggerated autonomic reflexes.
